After Two Decades, Ex-Booker Winner Kiran Desai Shortlisted Again for ‘The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny’

After nearly twenty years, acclaimed writer Kiran Desai has once again been shortlisted for the Booker Prize, this time for her new novel The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny. The 667-page book follows the lives of Sonia and Sunny, who meet in the United States after moving there as Indian immigrants. Through their story, the novel explores themes of identity, belonging, and the immigrant experience.

Born and brought up in New Delhi, Desai moved to England with her family at the age of 15 before later settling in the United States, where she continues to live. Literary excellence runs in the family: her mother, Anita Desai, was shortlisted for the Booker three times. In 2006, Kiran Desai won the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Fiction Award for The Inheritance of Loss. She began her career with her debut novel Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard (1998), which was praised by Salman Rushdie and won the Betty Trask Award.

Now, with The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny, Desai has returned to the global literary stage, drawing the attention of readers and judges alike. Book lovers around the world are eagerly awaiting the final Booker Prize results.
