Me Before You, directed by Thea Sharrock, successfully combines romance and sorrow, making it even harder to forget once it touches your heart. A story of Louisa Clark (Emilia Clarke), an effervescently bubbly and quirky girl, and Will Traynor (Sam Claflin), once an adrenaline junkie whose life takes a brutal swing after meeting with an accident and becoming a complete paraplegic. The meandering pace of the film makes it absorb the intended heft from happy-go-lucky moments. Lou brings the sunshine into Will’s otherwise dull days with her endearing optimism and garish outfits while Will unfurls Lou into the real world using his lethal wit and charm, revealing to her depths she herself was unaware of. The scene when Lou takes Will to a surprise vacation stands out-it is one of those rare moments when Will actually smiles, and it feels like a shared victory for both. The dialogue, especially the lines “You only get one life. It’s actually your duty to live it as fully as possible,” held true grip. It reminds how transient life is and how important it is to seize all moments. One quite striking detail I found was how little by little Will's wall pictures changed elevations throughout the film. They go from action-charged adventure to quiet and calm scenes, mirroring his internal struggle for acceptance and extended emotional fabric weaving into Lou. It is this symbolic information redistribution that Lou is able to usher him into rediscovering beauty, about this new order of things he finds himself dealing with. The ending is gut-wrenching-a heartbreaking, yet it offers closure-a whirlwind of gratitude and sorrow. Me Before You is not just a romantic flick; it is an ode to empathy, courage, and the ability of the human spirit to touch another person.
