Dear Simon Baker,
I have watched your series The Mentalist and honestly I don't even have the right words to describe how much this show means to me. Your gestures, your expressions, the way you talk, the way you pause before saying something- everything feels so natural and real. Ever since I first watched this series, something just changed in the way I look at acting. I have always been looking forward to seeing more of this kind of work from you. Patrick Jane and Lisbon are my absolute favorite characters not just in this series but honestly in anything I have ever watched.
Every single episode unveils another layer of drama and emotion and that is the thing about this show - it never gets repetitive. Even after watching it eight times, I still notice something new. Seven times on Amazon Prime and now once more on Netflix which just recently added it. My family thinks I am a little crazy for watching the same show this many times but I genuinely cannot help it. Every time I finish it I feel like something is missing and I just go back to the beginning again.
The way Patrick Jane reads people and speaks the truth so directly and without any filter - it feels so real and refreshing at the same time. There is no drama, no unnecessary emotion, just the plain truth. And I think that quality should exist in every human being honestly. We all spend so much time sugar coating things and dancing around the truth and Patrick Jane just walks into a room and within two minutes he already knows everything about everyone. That is not just good writing, that is you bringing that character to life in a way that makes it feel completely believable.
What truly stays with me is the friendship. Patrick Jane's understanding of what real friendship means is something I have rarely seen portrayed so honestly on screen. The episode where he helps Cho through his personal problem genuinely moved me. Because here is a man who everyone knows cannot fight, has no physical strength to back himself up, no hand to hand combat skills whatsoever - and he still steps forward without even thinking twice. That kind of loyalty and that innocent bravery is something that is very hard to find in real life and even harder to find on screen without it feeling forced or dramatic.
The whole team dynamic between Patrick, Lisbon, Cho, Rigsby and Van Pelt never felt like a workplace. It always felt like people who actually care about each other and that warmth comes through in every single scene. Lisbon's patience with Patrick, the way she understands him without him having to explain himself - that relationship alone could carry an entire series.
I also want to say that the way you carry that grief about your family throughout the whole show without making it the center of every scene takes real skill. It is always there underneath everything Patrick does and you never overplay it.
Thank you for giving us something this real and this human. The Mentalist will honestly never leave me.
